It sounds like there is limited entertainment for the local teenagers, consider a game room, maybe even a dance night. Farmers are always in need of a good feed/hardware store, consider one that may even draw tourist by offering farming antiques–or a grill in the feed store and a place for farmers to set down and talk.

I just bought a house and the living room had very rustic (looks like someone took and axe and chopped the heck out of them) beams that we’re almost black. We also think they are the fake wood beams. . Not really wood, but I don’t know what they are made of. Any way. . We painted them white along with our ceiling, but now they are way to bright against the white washed barn wood accent wall. I was thinking of putting a brown glaze over them. . Or maybe dry brushing some gray to make them go better with the accent wall. Anyone have any ideas. What I found out was – Your ideas sound fine for toning down the paint. I was just wondering if you like the rustic look (because of the way you described it. . Lol). If you wanted to you could get those boxed in with a light weight wood and then stained. I know of people who have bought houses that had those ceiling beams in them and they didn’t go at all with what they had in mind for the theme/decor/style of their home. Some just had them taken down (because, yes, they are usually NOT wood but some light weight ‘faux’ wood), and others have covered them. The surface of yours is very uneven, but I know someone who actually had a texture effect done over theirs and painted them with the ceiling and they were much less noticeable.

Metal detectors are used to locate fasteners in the large timbers. The metal fasteners (screws, nails etc) are removed by hand. The timbers are then sliced up using a saw mill. Typically they use thin kerf, narrow band technology to minimize waste. This is basically a very thin saw blade so you end up with more wood and less sawdust. Smaller pieces like joists, studs and flooring typically have so many nails and holes for wire and pipe that it makes reuse not very cost effective. Some old siding is reused and sold as “barn siding”. Some hardwood floors are reused but it is very labor intensive.
